Tutorials - Outlining Text in Photoshop

Program: Adobe Photoshop
Difficulty: Easy

Ever wondered how to outline your text so it's easier to see? Or even add an outer glow? This tutorial will teach you everything you need to know about outlining your text. :]

Step 1: Open Adobe Photoshop. Make the dimensions whatever size you want, depending on how much text you want to add. Since I'm going to use an image, I'm going to make my size 360x200. Make sure the mode is RGB Color and the content is Transparent.

Step 2: Click on the Horizontal Type Tool and make a square wherever you want your text to be. If you end up not liking this spot, you can always change it once you've added your text. Also make the color you want your text to be by clicking on Set Foreground Color. If you are using an image, I'd use a color from it. This is what mine looks like so far.

Step 3: This step is when you will start outlining. Make sure your Text Layer is selected in the Layers Pallette, and click on Layer > Layer Style > Stroke. A box should pop up that looks like this:

You can adjust your Text Size, Opacicty, and Color all you want, as well as some other things. All I'm going to do is change my color, since everything else is already how I want it to be. :] After doing so, click ok. Now your text is outlined! Here's how it should look if you have done all the steps correctly.

Step 4: If you want to add an Outer Glow, make sure your Text Layer is selected in the Layers Pallette, and click on Layer > Layer Style > Outer Glow. A box should pop up that looks like this:

Now, if you want the glow to be white, adjust the Opacity to 100%, as white is the default color. If you want another color, click on the circle to the right under Noise. I'm going to use whtie. Next, adjust the spread and size to a decent number. I'm going to make my Spread 80 and my Size 5. This is what I always use. Now I'm going to change my Contour to the one on the bottom left. You can play around with the settings as much as you want. If you have done this correctly, your image should look like this, although I've added a border, and some effects. ;)
